TWO WAYS TO ENJOY JAPANESE TEA
Matcha or Steeped Tea?
Japanese tea takes many forms, but most rituals begin in one of two ways:
whisking powdered tea directly in the bowl, or steeping whole leaves
gently in a teapot.
WHISKED TEA
Chawan · Chasen · Chashaku
Matcha is prepared directly in the bowl. Finely ground tea is
combined with hot water and whisked until smooth and lightly
frothy. The shape of the chawan gives the whisk room to move,
while the bamboo chasen creates the tea’s characteristic texture.

STEEPED TEA
Sencha, Gyokuro & Hojicha
Kyusu · Yunomi · Tea Canisters
Leaf teas are brewed gently in a kyusu before being poured into
small cups. Water temperature, brewing time and the shape of the
teapot all influence the result, from the fresh character of
sencha to the sweetness of gyokuro and the roasted warmth of hojicha.

JAPANESE TEA CRAFT
The Vessel Matters
In Japanese tea, the bowl, cup or teapot is more than a container.
Its material, shape and finish affect how the tea is prepared,
poured and experienced.
A wide chawan leaves space for the bamboo whisk to move freely.
A side-handled kyusu gives control when pouring small servings of
sencha or gyokuro. Yunomi are shaped to sit naturally in the hand,
while different clays and glazes change the weight, texture and
warmth of each piece.
Across Japan, regional traditions have developed their own
approaches to tea ceramics. Tokoname is especially known for
teapots, while Mino, Arita and other ceramic regions offer distinct
combinations of clay, porcelain, glaze and form.
The best teaware is not simply admired. It is designed to be used,
handled and enjoyed over time.

Clay & Porcelain
Material changes the weight, feel and heat retention of the vessel.
02
Shape & Pour
Form follows preparation, from a wide chawan to the controlled pour of a kyusu.
03
Regional Craft
Tokoname, Mino, Arita and other regions each bring their own ceramic traditions.
04
Made to Be Used
Japanese teaware is at its best when it becomes part of everyday life.
FIND THE RIGHT PIECE
Choosing Your Teaware
Start with the tea you enjoy most. The right vessel should make
preparation easier, feel good in the hand and become part of the ritual.
FOR WHISKED TEA
For Matcha
Choose a chawan with enough width for the whisk to move freely
and a form that feels comfortable to hold.

FOR LEAF TEA
For Sencha & Gyokuro
A kyusu gives you control over temperature, steeping and pour,
especially for delicate Japanese green teas.
