Miyakonojo Hinoki, in a Wooden Masu

Product Description

Mori no Shitsurae brings Japanese hinoki into a small arrangement for the home: a square wooden masu, a 10 ml bottle of Mori no Shizuku essential oil and four wood cubes. The wood and oil come from hinoki grown in Miyakonojo, Miyazaki Prefecture.

Add one drop of oil to a cube, arrange the cubes in the masu and set it on a shelf, in an entryway or beside the bed. The wood releases the fragrance without a flame or electricity. Refresh with another drop when the scent fades, following the product label.

The masu is a traditional Japanese wooden measure. Here, it holds the aromatic cubes and can later be used for keys or small non-food items. If you prefer to use it for rice or food, reserve it for that purpose before adding any essential oil.

SOUEN. · By Nitto

Hinoki, given a new purpose.

SOUEN. began with a simple observation: a piece of hinoki too small for flooring still has something to give.

Created by Nitto, a Miyazaki wood manufacturer founded in 1950, the brand brings its knowledge of Japanese cypress to fragrance and everyday objects. Offcuts find a new role, while the wood’s grain, texture and scent remain at the heart of each design.

Knowledge of the wood

Decades of work with hinoki inform how SOUEN. shapes the material for everyday life.

A use for what remains

The brand began by finding a new purpose for wood left over from the making of building materials.
