Bring Kutani-Yaki Artistry to Your Floral Display

Product Description

Fine purple bush clover blossoms cross a field of dark leaves and warm gold decoration. Set against a pale ceramic body with soft green shading, the motif gives this compact Kutani vase the presence of a small botanical painting.

The design is known as Kinsai Hagi: kinsai refers to gold decoration, and hagi to bush clover. The contrast between the open, pale surface and the richly decorated shoulder draws attention to the flowers without crowding the composition.

A broad, softly rectangular body and an off-centre neck give the vase its distinctive silhouette. At 15.5 cm wide and 12 cm high, with a depth of just 5 cm, it sits comfortably on a console, shelf or bedside table. The narrow opening lends itself to a single bloom, a slender sprig or a few fine stems. Try a simple arrangement that leaves the decorated face visible.

Made in Japan, this piece belongs to the Kutani ceramic tradition. It is equally appealing between arrangements: displayed alone, its asymmetrical form and botanical detail bring colour to a quiet corner without requiring a large display.

The vase comes in a presentation box, a considered gift for a flower lover or an addition to a collection of Japanese ceramics.

What is Kutani ware?

Kutani ware is a tradition of Japanese porcelain associated with Ishikawa Prefecture. It first developed in the 17th century and is especially known for richly colored overglaze decoration, bold compositions and a wide range of styles that evolved over several centuries.

What are the five colors of Kutani ware?

The traditional Kutani palette is often referred to as Kutani Gosai, or the five Kutani colors: red, yellow, green, purple and dark blue. These vivid overglaze enamels are used in different combinations, from dense decorative painting to more restrained contemporary work.

Where is Kutani ware made?

Kutani ware is associated with Ishikawa Prefecture in Japan’s Hokuriku region, particularly the areas around Kaga, Komatsu and Kanazawa. The original Kutani production began near present-day Kaga in the mid-1600s.

Why does Kutani ware look so different from other Japanese porcelain?

Kutani is distinguished by its emphasis on decoration after the porcelain body has been fired. Layers of colored enamel are applied over the glaze, allowing artists to create saturated color, strong outlines and highly expressive imagery. This gives Kutani ware a more painterly and often more dramatic appearance than many other Japanese porcelain traditions.
