Mountain Cherry Blossoms Against Deep Red

Product Description

White mountain cherry blossoms open across a rich red ground, with a long-tailed bird perched among the branches. Its blue-green tail traces the rounded body, drawing the eye from the flowers towards the base. The contrast of pale petals and deep red gives this small Kutani vase a distinctive presence.

Made in Japan from porcelain, the vase has a gently rounded silhouette that narrows towards the opening. At 12 cm in diameter × 12 cm high (4.7 × 4.7 in), it is an intimate piece for a shelf, bedside table, or entryway console, where the details can be enjoyed at close range.

A single flower or a few slender stems are enough to complete the display. Try a white bloom to echo the decoration, or light greenery to bring out the bird’s cooler tones. Keep the arrangement airy and turn the decorated face towards the room. Between arrangements, the vase stands beautifully on its own.

The design is known as Yamazakura ni Tori—mountain cherry blossoms and bird. Supplied in a presentation box, it makes a considered gift for someone drawn to Japanese ceramics and nature-inspired objects.

Questions About This Piece

How large is the vase?
It measures 12 cm in diameter × 12 cm high (approximately 4.7 × 4.7 in). This is a compact accent vase for a shelf, bedside table, or small console—not a large centrepiece. The diameter refers to the widest part of the body.
What flowers work well with this shape?
A single bloom, a few slender stems, or a small sprig of greenery will suit its narrow opening. Keep the arrangement light so the bird and blossom decoration remains visible. Trim stems to complement the vase’s 12 cm height.
Does it come in a gift box?
Yes. The vase comes in a presentation box, making it a thoughtful gift for someone who enjoys Japanese ceramics, flowers, or decorative objects for the home.
Can I display it without flowers?
Yes. The rich red surface and detailed bird-and-blossom scene make it a decorative piece in its own right. Give it a little space on a shelf or console so the rounded silhouette and painted design can be appreciated.

What is Kutani ware?

Kutani ware is a tradition of Japanese porcelain associated with Ishikawa Prefecture. It first developed in the 17th century and is especially known for richly colored overglaze decoration, bold compositions and a wide range of styles that evolved over several centuries.

What are the five colors of Kutani ware?

The traditional Kutani palette is often referred to as Kutani Gosai, or the five Kutani colors: red, yellow, green, purple and dark blue. These vivid overglaze enamels are used in different combinations, from dense decorative painting to more restrained contemporary work.

Where is Kutani ware made?

Kutani ware is associated with Ishikawa Prefecture in Japan’s Hokuriku region, particularly the areas around Kaga, Komatsu and Kanazawa. The original Kutani production began near present-day Kaga in the mid-1600s.

Why does Kutani ware look so different from other Japanese porcelain?

Kutani is distinguished by its emphasis on decoration after the porcelain body has been fired. Layers of colored enamel are applied over the glaze, allowing artists to create saturated color, strong outlines and highly expressive imagery. This gives Kutani ware a more painterly and often more dramatic appearance than many other Japanese porcelain traditions.
