Yellow Florals for the Everyday Rice Bowl

Product Description

Yellow flowers and green foliage wrap around this Kutani porcelain rice bowl by Seikou Kiln. Named Yoshidaya Aoi, the design combines dark outlines and a densely patterned exterior with a plain white interior. Its appeal is immediate: a small everyday bowl with plenty of color and detail.

The rounded body narrows toward a raised foot, leaving the decoration visible around the sides. Yellow flowers stand out against the green leaves, while the white interior gives steamed rice a simple backdrop. Pair it with plain dishes to let the pattern lead the setting.

At 3.9 in in diameter and 2.4 in high (10 × 6 cm), according to the supplier, this is a compact bowl for a small serving of rice. Use it alongside soup, pickles, and other side dishes as part of an individual place setting.

Made in Japan from porcelain, it belongs to Seikou Kiln’s range of Kutani tableware intended for daily use. The Yoshidaya Aoi pattern gives the bowl a clear identity, whether you choose one for yourself or bring it into a mixed collection of Japanese dishes.

One rice bowl is included, supplied in a paper box. It makes a considered gift for someone who enjoys colorful tableware, without requiring a complete matching set.

What is Kutani ware?

Kutani ware is a tradition of Japanese porcelain associated with Ishikawa Prefecture. It first developed in the 17th century and is especially known for richly colored overglaze decoration, bold compositions and a wide range of styles that evolved over several centuries.

What are the five colors of Kutani ware?

The traditional Kutani palette is often referred to as Kutani Gosai, or the five Kutani colors: red, yellow, green, purple and dark blue. These vivid overglaze enamels are used in different combinations, from dense decorative painting to more restrained contemporary work.

Where is Kutani ware made?

Kutani ware is associated with Ishikawa Prefecture in Japan’s Hokuriku region, particularly the areas around Kaga, Komatsu and Kanazawa. The original Kutani production began near present-day Kaga in the mid-1600s.

Why does Kutani ware look so different from other Japanese porcelain?

Kutani is distinguished by its emphasis on decoration after the porcelain body has been fired. Layers of colored enamel are applied over the glaze, allowing artists to create saturated color, strong outlines and highly expressive imagery. This gives Kutani ware a more painterly and often more dramatic appearance than many other Japanese porcelain traditions.
